Lately, I’ve been a little obsessed with the Marvel film Ant-Man.  I’m a sucker for a good superhero film, and this was definitely that. To top it all off, the film heavily featured a curious creature that is often overlooked: the humble, yet incredible, ant. Yes, I know the film is a work of fiction (sadly, because having a shrinking suit would be so cool!) but there were a lot of elements that are based on fact, specifically when it comes to the awesome natural ability of ants. The Shrinking Man vs Ant-Man

So, I watched Ant-Man recently and loved it! Not just because I’m a massive Marvel fan, but also because I really enjoyed noticing the similarities between the movie and Matheson’s The Shrinking Man. I wrote a review on the novel a while back (which you can read here) and I was a little surprised to see so many connections between the two. The Ant-Man character was first introduced in Marvel comics in 1962, five years after Matheson had published his novel (1957). One of the first things I noticed, then, is that the main character in both the novel and the film have the same first name: Scott. Coincidence? I think not.  Continue reading

Reading Update: March

73a7e7e8bb3440b4ab31c89f4946c613March has been a very good reading month for me. Unfortunately, I haven’t really done anything else productive this month. I have completely neglected my thesis work, I haven’t gone out as much, I haven’t used my new museum card at all, and I haven’t made the time to write any blog posts! On the plus side though, I’ve read a lot. And since reading makes me happy, I would say that I’ve spent this month in a state of bliss (except when I start thinking about my poor neglected thesis…).  Continue reading
